GASTON COUNTY, N.C. —

A man is accused of trying to outrun officers and hitting a car, sending a driver to the hospital.

Police said the incident began because Anthony Giglio is wanted for breaking and entering into his ex-wife's home. She allegedly saw him, called 911 and followed until he picked up speed and got onto Interstate 85 south.

Police said Giglio sped down I-85, drove up the ramp to Cox Road and rear-ended a car stopped at the red light. That car spun around and was pushed off the road.

“(It was) scary,” witness Logan Hafer said. “It's just a bad situation all around."

Hafer said he watched in disbelief as Giglio got out of the BMW and took off running.

A man who asked not to show his face said he also saw the crash and ran after Giglio. He said he felt compelled to help because the crash was just yards away from him and his young son.

“That little boy right there -- it could have been him,” he said.

Three other men who witnessed the crash also chased after Giglio, police said.

"Me and another guy shoved him to the ground,” the man said.

They said they held onto Giglio and called 911.

“We are holding him by the shirt to keep him from running off,” the 911 caller said.

In the 911 call, you can hear the suspect speaking with the men.

“Just sit here until the officer gets here,” the caller said.

“No,” the man said.

“You are not -- no? Yes, because you are not going anywhere,” the caller said.

The trooper who arrived said one man had Giglio in a bear hug, and that all he had to do was put handcuffs on him.

“That shows the good that we do have left in humanity where people see an accident, see someone fleeing the scene and actually step up and do the right thing,” Trooper J. J. Letcavage said.

The driver who was rear-ended suffered minor injuries.

Police said Giglio told them he needed medical attention as well, so they took him to the hospital.

Police said now, in addition to breaking and entering, Giglio faces charges of reckless driving and felony hit-and-run.
