Cause of deadly Boone fire released

One person was killed in an overnight house fire in Boone, firefighter said.

BOONE, N.C. —

Investigators have released the cause of a fire in Watauga County that killed a woman from Boone.

Firefighters said June Hicks died from smoke inhalation early Wednesday at her home off Rainbow Trail.

Investigators told Channel 9 the fire started from items left too close to a space heater.

At the time, firefighters responded to the fire, the temperature outside was only 10 degrees.
