A Charlotte woman told Eyewitness News that she opened her state tax return this week to find her check plus another one worth hundreds of dollars.
The man who was supposed to get that other check lives less than a mile away from her.
"When I first opened it up I was surprised and frankly I laughed I was so surprised by It," said Kelsey Reinhard.
Reinhard's father works at Channel 9. The extra check sent to her was made out to a man she doesn't know. His name and address were on the check.
Eyewitness News drove less than a mile to the man's house, but no one was home. Afterwards, Channel 9 gave James Luft a call at work.
"You'd like to think there was a little more oversight in the process that occurs, but apparently there wasn't in this case," he said.
Eyewitness News reached out to the Department of Revenue in Raleigh.
A spokesman sent a comment which said, "On rare occasions, the machine that inserts refund checks into envelopes inserts a second check. It's a mechanical failure. We receive few complaints about it, so it is rare but does happen. If a taxpayer receives a second refund check to someone else, we ask that they return it to us at: NC Department of Revenue Post Office Box 25000 Raleigh, North Carolina, 27640-0640."
