CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Heavy rain and lightning moving through the area delayed uptown Charlotte’s fireworks show on Thursday night by about 45 minutes. That meant thousands of people had to wait more than an hour in the rain to see the fireworks display.Organizers at Memorial Stadium told Eyewitness News early Thursday the show would go on even if it rained, and that's exactly what happened.Hundreds of people used umbrellas to shield themselves from the rain, and many started to leave when the rain really started to pour. Organizers waited for the rain to subside and then moved forward. The rain delay led to a lot of complaints. Mecklenburg County's 311 center representatives said about 200 of the 473 calls they had Thursday night were related to the event. They said those calls picked up after 9:15 p.m. when the fireworks show had not started on time. Several people also called Eyewitness News to inquire about the delay also.
