A Charlotte city councilwoman said leaders plan to discuss safety on a west Charlotte road at next week’s meeting after two young boys died in an accident there Wednesday.

The family was walking to a daycare on the shoulder of Tyvola Road near Shady Lane at the time of the accident.

Police said a truck driver hit them.

City leaders said they planned on fixing that stretch of road a few months ago, but ran out of money for new projects. There is no sidewalk, so neighbors petitioned to make it safer.

One neighbor said she saw crews put orange spray paint on her grass early last year.

“They did have markings like they were going to do a sidewalk, but they never did. And to see the results is two young kids had to lose their life because there’s no protection,” said Trenise White, who lives in the neighborhood.

One councilwoman said the project was second on the city’s to-do list, meaning the work was only weeks away from starting before the funding dried up.

Family and friends of 1-year-old Jeremy Brewton Jr. and 5-year-old Kadrien Pendergrass said they are stunned by the accident and will remember the boys as loving and full of life.

“We used to take the kids to the parks and stuff and ride the bikes,” said Ryan Miller, a friend of the family.

Police have not said how the crash happened, but the truck’s driver, Dirk Brown, has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Brown’s family said he also has two children.

The boys' family set up a website to accept donations to pay for the funerals. So far, they have raised more than $5,500.
