A motorcyclist tried to avoid the crash that killed him at a busy southeast Charlotte intersection.
Police said a driver turned left in front of 51-year-old Paul Stephenson while he was riding his motorcycle on Sharon Amity Road at Castleton Road shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Stephenson tried to stop but he slid on the pavement into the passenger side of the car.
Stephenson was wearing a helmet, but was killed.
Police said the driver of the car was Kanyon Carter, 39. Carter is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving with a revoked license.
Police said speed and alcohol use were not factors in the crash. Carter was charged last year with driving while impaired.
Carter is being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail under $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
The intersection of Sharon Amity and Castleton roads has been the scene of several serious crashes over the past few years. Eyewitness News investigated as neighbors pushed for changes, but the city said the number of crashes with injuries there is not unusually high.
Crews did add to two signs nearby that show drivers how fast they are going.
