Commerce: Spending up, incomes dip again

WASHINGTON —

People are spending more money, even though their incomes are not growing.

New numbers released Friday show consumer spending rose 0.8 percent last month, the best gain in seven months.

After taking into account inflation, income fell for a second straight month.

The commerce department said the rise in gas prices is behind some of the increase in spending.

According to AAA, the national average is up to $3.92 a gallon. In 11 states, the average is already more than $4 a gallon.

The Carolinas are below the national average. In North Carolina, the average price for a gallon of gas is $3.88. In South Carolina, the average price is $3.70.
