UNION COUNTY, N.C. —
Statement to residents of Wesley Chapel from the mayor and council for the Village of Wesley Chapel concerning the proposed Union County School redistricting
“As many of you may be aware, the Union County School Board released proposed redistricting maps Tuesday evening that drastically impact the residents of the Village of Wesley Chapel. The Village Council and I are aware of these changes and what that will mean to many aspects of our community, including the education of our children and the value of our homes. We have already reached out to our School Board liaison and requested he attend one of our meetings in the near future if at all possible. We are also aware that public comments were not allowed at the School Board’s meeting Tuesday night, but that there will be an opportunity for comments at District Meetings that the Board will be scheduling.
In the interim, at our Council Meeting on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, the Wesley Chapel Village Council will be considering approval of a resolution addressed to the Union County School Board strongly opposing this proposal and requesting that other alternatives be considered. That resolution is in the process of being drafted, but please understand that the Council and I fully understand the impacts that this proposal could have on our community and will engage the School Board in every way possible to ensure our concerns are acknowledged and addressed.
Thank you for your emails and calls on this matter expressing your concerns. This is a matter that calls for all of us to unite to ensure that we are heard and appropriate changes are made to this initial proposal that reflect the values we all have in our children, homes and community.
