ROCK HILL, S.C. —
A crowd gathered at the employment office in Rock Hill on Tuesday as a major new employer announced it was hiring. The Internet photo storage and card company Shutterfly announced last month that it was moving a facility from Charlotte to Fort Mill, bringing more than 500 permanent jobs. Shutterfly is hiring 300 holiday workers in the Charlotte area. The seasonal jobs are to last only six to eight weeks. The company held the job fair at the employment office on Highway 5 in Rock Hill until 1 p.m on Tuesday. Hundreds of people crammed into the Rock Hill employment office, unaware that the jobs were only temporary. "I figured this right here would be a good opportunity. Why not try? You know you have to try," said Marcus Burkins who has been out of a job for a year. One attendee, Justin Johnson said he had wished he had known the jobs were seasonal before he came out and stood in line for over an hour. "They had to get us out here, they had to get us out here one way or another, and they didn't tell us that, unfortunately," said Johnson. Several people grew tired of waiting and left, choosing to apply later or online. The company that ran the job fair, Corestaff, said there will be at least one more fair in the future.
