Disney doing away with junk food ads

WASHINGTON —

Soon junk food advertisers will not be able to reach children who watch the Disney Channel.

The Walt Disney Company, along with First Lady Michelle Obama, announced it is banishing those kinds of ads from its media outlets, including TV channels.

The ads will have to meet Disney’s nutrition standards test before it is aired.

Leaders said the move will put pressure on other networks to follow.

The new guidelines do not go into effect until 2015, when certain advertising agreements expire.
