CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Duke Energy said it earned $634 million in the first quarter of 2013.The results are much higher than a year ago, but the company had not yet merged with Progress Energy last year.Higher electricity rates and cooler weather helped Duke’s profit.On Thursday, Duke executives spoke to shareholders at their annual meeting.Shareholders are upset the executives have been making a lot of money, while they are raising power bills.Each director makes about $200,000 per year.Outgoing CEO Jim Rogers said that is in line with other companies that size.He has agreed not to take a salary for the last seven years, but his stock shares mean he will get about $8 million a year for two years after he leaves.His dividends are worth about $300,000 per year.
