CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
An east Charlotte road was blocked for eight hours near a school after a series of crashes just after 3 a.m. Monday.A driver hit a utility pole, then a fire hydrant and then a tree on Eastway Drive. Police said utility lines went down across the road.The crash happened between Central Avenue and Kilborne Drive, about one mile from Garinger High School. Students started classes there at 7:15 a.m.One person was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.While the crash was under investigation, a van drove down the road and crashed into a police car that was blocking the scene. Officers gave that driver a field sobriety test and then arrested him.Eastway Drive was closed until about 11 a.m.
