NORTH CAROLINA —

Environmentalists are suing North Carolina, saying it is not doing enough to protect groundwater from coal ash waste.

The Southern Environmental Law Center's lawsuit said the state is not following its own law that bans 14 coal-fired power plants from contaminating groundwater and requires them to clean up outdated coal-ash ponds.

The ash from the coal-burning process contains toxic chemicals, including arsenic.
