BURKE COUNTY, N.C. —
Several families in Burke County had to be rescued Monday morning after spending a cold night in the Pisgah National Forest huddled in their SUVs with small children.
ATV rescue teams found the families around 5:30 a.m. in the Brown Mountain off-road trail system north of Morganton.
One of their SUVs ran out of gas on a trail while another got stuck on some rocks Sunday night, officials said.
The group said they were not able to get a signal on their cellphones to call for help.
One woman said they covered themselves with paper towels to stay warm.
