CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
A Davidson woman is working in a unique way to honor her late husband. Instead of grieving on his birthday, which would have been Friday, she has dubbed it "Pay if forward for Fred" day. At the Ronald McDonald House in Charlotte, people who parked in the lot Thursday will return to find a present on their windshield. "We know the families here are under stress and we are leaving gift cards and notes trying to brighten their day," said Cynthia Scully. Scully wants to show families staying there with seriously ill children that someone cares. It is part of her mission after losing her husband to stage 4 lung cancer. "Fred was 29 years old. A life-long non-smoker. We were stunned, devastated," Scully said. Fred passed away just six months after diagnosis, but Scully said they were uplifted by family, friends and even strangers. "People did amazing things, paid medical bills, took care of the lawn, provided meals," Scully said. Now, in Fred's memory, she plans to spread similar random acts of kindness of his birthday, which is Friday. Scully is asking the community to join in. She has created a special Facebook page full of ideas. "We hope as the community gets involved, people can post photos and videos of what they are doing and we can feed off of that and be inspired by each other," she said. Scully's sister-in-law is already onboard. "We're baking brownies to deliver, sandwiches. My husband is donating blood, trying to get a lot of people involved," said Erin Mills. Scully said it will remind people that when you give, you receive. "If people are grieving, suffering or had a hard year, it's a great way to get outside of themselves. It makes you feel better about the world we live in, so I hope people will join us," Mills said.Check out the "Pay it forward for Fred" Facebook page here.
