ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. —
A Rowan County family is fighting with the school board.
John and Patricia Burke said the school board won't allow their sons Grayson, 8, and Gavin, 5, to attend the same school.
Because of where the Burkes live, the boys should technically attend China Grove Elementary.
Three years ago, at the Burkes' request, the district allowed Grayson to transfer to Faith Elementary. The school is closer to their home and to their babysitter.
When the Burkes recently tried to transfer Gavin, their request was denied.
"It has caused a great deal of stress," said Patricia Burke. "It's what we think about constantly since our first denial."
"I'm frustrated,” John Burke said. “We're really aggravated. We've gone through the process and nothing has worked.”
The Burkes showed Eyewitness News the transfer application, which listed hardships or childcare issues.
They are not only concerned about finances. Their work schedules mean to get to China Grove, Gavin would have to catch the bus alone and walk past a pond and through a trailer park.
The Burkes have appealed the transfer denial twice and have even reached out to state officials.
“We wrote letters and emails to county commissioners, our congressman, even the governor," said Patricia Burke.
Rowan Salisbury School officials wouldn't explain their decision, citing student confidentiality.
The Burkes are still hoping for a solution before school starts.
