The father of two young boys who were hit by a truck and killed explained Thursday how the accident happened.

The brothers died Wednesday morning as they walked with their father along Tyvola Road in west Charlotte.

The boys’ father, Jeremy Brewton, said he had seen the truck and the driver in the neighborhood on other occasions. And he said as soon as the driver jumped out of the truck after hitting the boys, he knew the driver had been distracted.

“They were my pride and joy, my pride and joy,” Brewton said.

Walking around the corner at Tyvola Road and Shady Lane, Brewton remembers telling his son Kadrien to behave at school.

Brewton said they were walking on the gravel on the shoulder of the road. He was on the outside, pushing his baby daughter in a stroller. The two boys were beside him.

Then a Sears truck started to turn right on to West Tyvola Road right next to Brewton and his children.

“He cut into the gravel. His tire was in the gravel,” Brewton said.

Suddenly, Brewton said he was thrown forward.

“The outside of the truck pushed me outward, (and the) tire was coming in on them,” he said.

The truck hit 5-year-old Kadrien Pendergrass and 1-year-old Jeremy Brewton Jr., killing them both.

The driver, 32-year-old Dirk Brown, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle.

Brewton said Brown was on his cellphone when he got out of the truck.

“When he jumped out, he said, ‘I’m going to call you back. I just hit this man and kids,’” Brewton said.

No one answered the door at Brown’s home Thursday.

Drena Pendergrass, the mother of the boys, said she wants justice.

“I can’t get my boys back,” she said. “There’s a void left in this home and in our hearts.”

A funeral will be held for both boys on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Greater Galilee Baptist Church on West Park Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
