Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the number of people seriously injured on Lake Norman is down this year.
This summer they have seen more boaters on the water and have taken an increased number of calls for service, according to Capt. Cecil Brisbon. However, the number of people injured and the number of DWI arrests are down.
Each year, just before the Fourth of July weekend, CMPD and other law enforcement agencies on the lake conduct "Operation Dry Water." They made 17 arrests for DWI last year. This year, there was just five.
Police credit the decrease to a stronger push for boater safety.
"I think some of the issues that occurred out here last year have made people think more about their own personal safety and they're taking that into context every time they come out here for a nice weekend," Brisbon said.
Police also started handing out flyers after every safety stop outlining the safety requirements and tips for boaters.
