Firefighter finds three abandoned bear cubs in box

SOUTH CAROLINA —

Three South Carolina bear cubs were found abandoned in a box.

A firefighter in Oconee County said he saw the box on the side of the road last week.

He says he stopped, thinking someone had abandoned some puppies.

He took the cubs to his fire station and called the department of natural resources.

First, he showed them to his daughters.

"I thought they were cute, so my sister wanted to keep one and I wanted to keep one," the firefighter's daughter said.

Two of the cubs were taken to a bear rescue center in Tennessee. The third was taken to a state park in Charleston, S.C.

Experts believe the bears are about a month old.
