KANNAPLOIS, N.C. —
Firefighters said a faulty chimney caused the fire that badly damaged a home in Kannapolis.
The fire started earlier Sunday morning at the home on Athens Street.
Fire crews said the family was inside when the blaze started, but thanks to working smoke detectors, everyone made it out safely.
The Kannapolis fire chief said fires like this are all too common during the cold weather.
"As the temperatures drop we are seeing an increase in the number of heating fires," said Chief Tracey Winecoff.
The chief said he wants people to keep their chimneys free of buildup to prevent similar fires.
As for the family affected in the fire, they are being assisted by the Red Cross.
