CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Several families are without a place to call home after a fire broke out at a south Charlotte apartment complex Thursday morning.
The fire broke out around 7 a.m., when a lot of people were already awake and able to get out of the building on Cedar Point Lane safely.
A video that a neighbor took with his phone moments after the fire started shows flames shooting through the top of the roof.
"It was big. I was standing over there where the two trucks were, and I could feel the heat wave of those flames touched me," said Urial Flores.
Firefighters were able to get the flames under control in less than 30 minutes, but there was quite a bit of damage. Fire investigators said eight units were damaged.
One teenager said he was already at school when a friend called to tell him about the fire. He said he ran home to make sure his mother and little brother were OK.
"My little brother is like 8 years old, so on my way here, I was like, 'My little brother, my little brother, my little brother,'" Jeff Diaz said.
Another teen apparently went door to door, warning people to get out of the building.
"She seen it and she got out, woke her father up, her brother, her cousin and ran around the whole apartment and got everybody out to safety," said the girl's mother, Donisha Casey.
Investigators said it could be several days before they're allowed back in the building.
