Slick roadways cause traffic issues in NC mountains

HICKORY, N.C. —

Freezing rain fell in the mountains and foothills on Friday and created all kinds of traffic problems.

Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty said he was hearing accidents every four or five minutes in Watauga County. A stretch of roadway was shut down because there was a sheet of ice on it.

In Catawba County, a vehicle driven by a father with three small children slid off the road on the ice.  The father said he had just picked his kids up from day care.

“I’m scared for my kids … black ice. We came around a curb, I veered off on the wrong side. I tapped the brakes,” the man said.

Other drivers stopped to help the family. Nobody was hurt in the crash.

In Caldwell County, school buses were turned back after the freezing rain started and school was canceled.

Later in the day, a crash shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Hickory. Drivers were being detoured off exit 121 to cross over George Hilderbran Road to return to I-40 east.
