GASTON COUNTY, N.C. —

A Gastonia Police Department official said a suspect was shot by an officer after police were called about an assault with a deadly weapon Friday night. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. at East Ninth Avenue.

The police responded to a call about domestic violence with a weapon.

Police said they think the weapon was hedge clippers.

Two people had been assaulted by 50-year-old Kenneth Glaze, police said.

Glaze's sister, Judy Glaze, was chocked by her brother, and her boyfriend, Scotty Somerset, was slapped during the
incident, police said. Both were assaulted a second time, this time with hedge shears, and the victims left the home and called the police.

According to police, this was not the first time they have had to deal with the Glaze at this house. Glaze ran out of the house with the clippers in his hand.

Police said they tracked him to a wooded area behind the house and there was a struggle in the wooded area.

During a struggle for one of the officers' handguns, shots were fired which fatally wounded Glaze.

The State Bureau of Investigation and Internal Affairs are at the scene along with Gastonia police.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
