NORTH CAROLINA —
Chuck Hagel is hoping a letter to some of his sharpest critics will help him win confirmation to be defense secretary. In the letter, Hagel said he does not remember and disavows a 2007 report claiming he described the State Department as an adjunct to the Israeli government. Republican senators stalled the nomination last week with a filibuster over Hagel's views on Israel, Iran and nuclear arms.
