Hearings over DOT letters continue in Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. —

State Republicans on Wednesday tried to finally figure out who signed altered Department of Transportation letters that were sent to North Carolina lawmakers.

One letter asked for funding for future toll projects, including the Garden Parkway. Another requested the money be allocated sooner.

However, the head of the department said he never authorized the letters.

On Wednesday, an assistant gave a tearful apology for using his electronic signature on the letters.

“I deeply regret applying Jim’s signature on those letters, especially since I knew he was not aware of its contents,” he said.

A governor’s aide told lawmakers that he requested the signature in good faith.

On Thursday, the panel could decide if they want to take any more action regarding the issue.
