Home, business owners upset with state's plan to widen I-77 with toll roads

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Home and business owners told Channel 9 they are not happy with the state’s plan to expand Interstate 77 in the Lake Norman and Mooresville areas using toll roads.

The will speak out against the plan Monday night.

Lake Norman commuters will bear the brunt of the cost because they use I-77 the most to get to uptown.

The state’s plan is to build toll lanes on I-77 from Charlotte to Mooresville.

The $540 million project has the support from several Cornelius commissioners, but not many residents.

Other areas affected include Huntersville, Davidson and Iredell County.

Some drivers are worried it will add hundreds of dollars to their commute.

Another concern is that the private company in control of the toll lane will raise rates as they please.

A group called Widen I-77 wants the state to consider other options.

They will present a different plan to local and state leaders Monday at 7 p.m. in Cornelius.

Channel 9 will have more details on this story starting at 5 p.m.
