Investigators told Channel 9 one person was shot and killed Wednesday morning in Bessemer City.
Gary Campbell had just finished mowing his grass Wednesday morning when he got into an argument with Robert Lewis, his daughter's boyfriend.
Minutes later, there were shell casings and crime scene tape next to the fresh-cut grass on Tryon Courthouse Road near Bessemer City.
Campbell's body lay next to Lewis' SUV.
"This community has changed over all of the years I have lived here," said Sid Lovelace, a neighbor.
Lovelace knew both men. He said he is not surprised by the shooting, but he is disappointed.
"It's a different country today," Lovelace said. Police say over the past six years they have responded to numerous disturbance calls and domestic disputes at the suspect and victim's homes, which are right next to each other.
Investigators said Campbell's wife and daughters had filed protection orders against him.
"Often times in those situations, people run across each other and things get out of hand and it appears that's what occurred here this morning," said Assistant Chief Joe Ramey with Gaston County Police Department.
Police said Lewis left home on his way to work taking the dirt driveway that winds around Campbell's house. Campbell was in the front yard.
Police said the two met and got into fight. They said Lewis is the only one who fired a gun.
