KANNAPOLIS, N.C. —

A Kannapolis family safely escaped their home after it caught fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to a home on Hahn Street shortly before 3 a.m. There was heavy smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home when they arrived, officials said.

Firefighters said two adults, one child and two cats were inside at the time of the fire, and they all escaped without injury.

A portion of Ridge Avenue was closed to traffic for about two hours during the incident.

Officials said the American Red Cross was notified to assist the family with housing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
