NORTH CAROLINA —

Starting New Year's Day, landlords in North Carolina will have to follow new laws for smoke detectors.

When they install a new smoke alarm or replace an old one, the new one will have to be tamper-resistant with a 10-year-litium battery.

That law will not apply to homes with a hardwired alarm with a battery back up or to homes with a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide alarm.
