Lane, ramp closures scheduled as work continues on I-85 widening project

CONCORD, N.C. —

Intermittent lane and ramp closures are scheduled for this week as work continues on the Interstate 85 widening project in the Concord area.

The work will affect traffic at the N.C. 73 (Exit 55) interchange, the NCDOT said.

Crews will be setting beams in the median beginning at midnight Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday. The work will continue each night through Saturday morning, officials said. During the closures, traffic will exit I-85 South at N.C. 73, taking the bridge up and over the interstate to continue south. There will also be a lane closure on N.C. 73 West during this time, the NCDOT said.

Drivers wanting to avoid the area can use U.S. 29 as an alternate route, officials said.

The project includes widening I-85 from four to eight lanes from south of Bruton Smith Boulevard to N.C. 73 in Cabarrus County, and converting the interchanges with Poplar Tent Road and N.C. 73 to diverging diamond interchanges.
