A mother was charged with child abuse a week after her toddler was killed, according to officials.
Whitney Weathers was arrested Thursday and taken into jail with tears streaming down her face. She was charged with two counts of negligent child abuse.
Weathers' boyfriend was arrested last week after her son was found dead inside a Long View home.
According to an arrest warrant, Weathers failed to provide medical care to her 1- and 3-year-old children after they were burned.
Weathers fought back tears as she shook her head no when asked if she abused her children.
Police said she was at work when her Jaydon Sandlin died and her 3-year-old daughter Kylie was hospitalized Friday.
William Lail III, who was watching the children, was charged with murder after police found burns on their bodies.
Police said they also found scabs of old burns on the children leading them to believe it wasn't the first time the children had been abused.
"I do think she bears some responsibility," said neighbor Connie Sigmon.
Neighbors have left a small memorial on the steps leading to the apartment where the children lived.
The arrest warrants state Weathers showed a reckless disregard for human life by failing to report the injuries to her children. The older scalding burns were found all over their bodies. Sigmon said if the allegations are true, she doesn't understand why a mother wouldn't act.
"Why would she not have stopped him of he was doing it? As a mother it is her responsibility to take care of that no matter what," Sigmon said.
