CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
The man who police say gunned down a Charlotte man as he walked home from a coffee shop in SouthPark pleaded not guilty Thursday morning.
Chauncey Sterling is charged with shooting and killing Robert Barber during a daytime robbery attempt last year.
Sterling was in the courtroom only a few minutes, but it was long enough for him to plead not guilty to robbing and killing Barber last April.
The murder shocked the community and launched an intense search. Police arrested Sterling several days later in York County.
He has been in jail since his arrest.
The prosecutor said Sterling was not offered a plea deal, so he will go on trial in June.
