CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. —

The man accused of hitting six bicyclists and leaving the scene was sentenced Tuesday.

Daniel Wilson will serve a split sentence of 40 days in jail. The first seven days will be served immediately, and the rest will be worked out based on probation.

The wife of Tim Sigmon, who sustained some of the most serious injuries and was in the hospital for a week, took the stand on Tuesday morning. She explained in graphic detail her husband’s injuries and said Wilson took away something her husband was passionate about.

Wilson was found guilty of hitting six people along St. Stephens Church Road in May 2010. He did not immediately call 911 and left the scene. It took four hours before Wilson turned himself in.

Wilson and his parents also both took the stand Tuesday morning. Both his parents said he is a good person who made a terrible mistake.

When Wilson took the stand, he looked at Sigmon and said, "I never got a chance to look at you and say out loud, I'm sorry."
