CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Nearly five months after a Charlotte father tried to kill himself by running on to Interstate 77 with his 2-year-old daughter in his arms, the girl and her mother are talking about the ordeal and the pending trial.
By the looks of Lizziah Summers, most people would not know the 2-year-old survived life-threatening injuries when her father, Derrick Summers, ran into traffic on I-77 with the girl in his arms.
Her mother, Lativia McClain, had a protective order, but Summers had visitation rights. When he called that Sunday night, she could tell something was wrong.
She described him as distraught and suggested that he was about to take his life and the life of his daughter.
The next time McClain saw her daughter, she was unconscious, in a neck brace and hooked up to several machines.
The girl spent 42 days in the hospital with a fractured spine and a punctured spleen and liver.
Months later, the only sign of her injuries is a scar on her face.
“She goes to the mirror and rubs the side of her face, so I know one day I will have to tell her,” McClain said.
However, McClain said she would not trust Summers with her daughter again. She said she does not harbor any hatred toward Summers, but she is hoping he will face consequences in court.
“It’s another thing if you try to take your own life. As far as a child and not giving them an option to grow up, no. You deserve whatever, and it shouldn’t be lenient,” McClain said.
McClain said her focus is on the future and the fact that her daughter is happy and healthy.
“She’s here -- that’s what matters and I’m blessed. I thank God for giving me a second chance to be a mother of two and not one,” she said.
Derrick Summers has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, felony child abuse and violating a domestic violence protection order.
He is scheduled to be in court next week.
