A veteran North Carolina lawmaker is being honored for his service by a group of Mecklenburg County Democrats.
Rep. Mel Watt is to be honored at the Gantt-Watt Reception scheduled for Saturday at the Charlotte School of Law. The event is sponsored by the Young Democrats of Mecklenburg County.
In addition, the reception will honor a Democrat who has followed in the footsteps of Watt and former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt.
In May, President Barack Obama named the 67-year-old Watt to head the Federal Housing Finance Agency. The agency is the federal regulatory body that oversees the two national mortgage lending behemoths behind most new mortgages.
