RALEIGH, N.C. —
North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue said she will include more than $10 million in her budget proposal to help those impacted by the state’s sterilization program.
The money will support $50,000 payments that a task force recommended for victims of North Carolina’s eugenics program.
For 45 years, the state sterilized about 7,600 people who were poor, uneducated and classified as mentally disabled or ill.
North Carolina legislators heard from a man Tuesday who studied state-sponsored sterilization programs. The visit came just one month before lawmakers will vote on whether to give compensation to victims of the state’s eugenic program.
