RALEIGH, N.C. —
North Carolina lawmakers scrutinized the Department of Health and Human Services over a pair of computer systems that are not working well for some doctors and food stamp applicants.Lawmakers want to know why there have been constant issues with the Medicaid billing system that rolled out July 1.The panel will also ask about a computer program that led to food stamp delays. At the hearing, Sen. Earline Parmon referred to the NCTracks program "NC OFFtracks."It is a problem Channel 9 has been following for months. In August, the state’s social services director told Channel 9 everything would be fixed in a couple of weeks.Channel 9 followed up and found that 93 percent of the system was fixed. It was a packed house in Raleigh Tuesday and the Health and Human Services secretary was the one in the hot seat.Lawmakers grilled DHHS director Aldona Wos and asked about the numerous issues and delays plaguing Medicaid and food stamps. The grueling and tense hearing lasted more than eight hours. For nine months, Wos has been under fire for problems with her department’s programs like the new Medicaid payment system many said isn’t working right. She is also under fire for the controversial hires involving campaign staffers of Gov. Pat McCrory.Channel 9 was there when there were some heated exchanges in the hearing.“What are we doing to make this less complex, so it’s not a guessing game?” said Sen. Floyd McKissick.“No system is perfect,” Wos said.“We cannot fly by the seat of our pants anymore that the providers can,” said Sen. Tommy Tucker. “You go hire someone who is a year out of college with an English major and pay him $85,000.”“My obligation is to find the right person to do the right job,” Wos said.“I heard that all the problems raised today can be easily addressed. Well, then do it,” said Sen. Martin Nesbit.
