NC paid extra $178M in unemployment benefits

North Carolina's Employment Security Division paid hundreds of millions of dollars in extra unemployment benefits.

The U.S. Labor Department said during a 12-month period, the state handed out an extra $178 million.

About 13 percent of people who received unemployment benefits were given the wrong amount.

Across the U.S., overpayments totaled more than $5 billion.
