HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. —

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is keeping a section of McCoy Road over Gar Creek in Huntersville closed until mid-October.

The bridge has been closed since June 11.

Traffic will be detoured around the project -- from Beatties Ford Road to Hambright Road, then back to McCoy Road.

The closure was moved back two weeks so that the project could begin after school ended for the summer.

The new bridge will be able to handle heavier vehicles and increased traffic volumes.

The bridge replacement is scheduled to be completed Oct. 14, and the contractor can continue vegetation and reforestation work through March 30, 2013.
