CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Construction along the light rail extension begins next year, but a new project is already beginning in north Charlotte.

Currently there is an empty lot sitting at Caldwell and 12th streets, but a private developer plans to build more than 100 apartments there.

One business owner in the neighborhood said the light rail could mean big business for him.

A CATS development specialist said it is in the final design stage for the light rail.

This year they are buying land for the project and moving utilities along the route to the University of North Carolina - Charlotte.
