INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. —
Investigators said Friday if some of the people involved had not lied, they would have been able to arrest the gunman much sooner.
It took detectives with the Union County Sheriff's Office four days to track down seven people tied to the death of Christopher Brown. Brown was shot and killed outside his Indian Trial home late Saturday night. Eyewitness News went through the investigation process with Detective Sgt. Kevin James who said they could have had a suspect in custody sooner, but several people lied. On Wednesday night, detectives found 18-year-old Chase Johnson, who they believe is the shooter, in West Virginia. Thursday they arrested William Johnson, who they believe drove the car involved in Saturday's shooting. Thursday deputies also arrested Michael, Conner and Alex Wilson. Investigators tell us Chase Johnson stayed with them. They say the three family members made up a story to throw investigators off Johnson's trail. They also believe Conner Wilson drove Johnson to West Virginia after the shooting. "All indications point to that they knew at the time what had happened or what had taken place and they were trying to either get him out of the state or get him away from here," James said. They also arrested Wilson Taylor who police say was at the victim's house when the shooting happened. Investigators also told us he lied to them. Finally, Wesley Hollingsworth was arrested, accused of stealing the gun that was used during Saturday's murder. -- though deputies say he was not there at the time of the shooting. Chase Johnson and William Johnson, who investigators say are not related, are being held under no bond. Hollingsworth is still in jail Friday night.
