WASHINGTON —

Several newly-elected lawmakers from the Carolinas will be sworn in as part of the 113th Congress in Washington.

Officials will swear in the newest House and Senate members Thursday afternoon.

One of those to be sworn in is Tim Scott.  South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Scott to replace Sen. Jim DeMint, who is resigning.

Scott has represented South Carolina’s 4th Congressional district, which is in the Charleston area.

DeMint supported Scott for the Senate seat because of his conservative values.

Scott has said he believes in limited government, reduced spending and worker rights.

He is the only black Republican in Congress.

Also, Tom Rice will take the oath for office for South Carolina’s brand new 7th Congressional district, which includes Chesterfield County.

Rice will serve on the transportation committee, and is expected to push construction of an interstate to Myrtle Beach.
