A deck collapsed, hurting more than 20 people, and three of them were rushed to the hospital, according to officials.
The fire chief said 22 people were injured in Cherryville and one of them was seriously injured. The fire chief said there was simply too much weight on it to hold.
The people were gathered for a family Fourth of July cookout. The home had been decorated for the special occasion and the family was just sitting down to eat. Around 4 p.m., the deck collapsed.
"A wooden structure, concrete structure needs to make sure it can have the weight on it that it's designed to hold. And this deck being old and the weight load that was on it, it collapsed in the middle," Fire Chief Jeff Cash said.
The fire chief told Channel 9 the deck was over 20 years old, a contributing factor to the collapse.
