Officials monitor dam but say there’s no immediate danger

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

All day Tuesday, there's been concern about what appears to be a leak in the dam at a Charlotte pond.

Fire crews joined emergency management and state inspectors after they had found the leak in what's called the Sammonds Dam.

Water was gushing out below a pipe that's supposed to channel water. That raised concerns about whether the dam could fail and water from the bigger pond could flood a smaller pond just below and potentially flow over Lake Road in the Derita community.

After taking a close look, emergency management officials decided there's no immediate danger to neighborhoods nearby. They are draining water from both ponds to give them extra capacity in case of more heavy rain Tuesday night.

“At this time, we believe the condition is stable,” said Tamera Eplin with N.C. Environment and Natural Resources. “We intend to monitor that and ask the owners to get an engineer involved to evaluate the dam and develop a repair plan.”
