A registered sex offender was sent back to jail after he went inside a Lincoln County Middle School.
An employee at East Lincoln Middle recognized Michael Perry from the offender registry, but officials said that he only went in the school to help his wife.
One parent said it was upsetting to hear that he was in the building during school hours.
Perry was arrested and went before a judge this morning.
School officials said he was caught because they followed procedure.
"He didn't make it past the office. Office staff did a great job," said Matt Stover.
Perry and wife are legal guardians of a child at the school. Two weeks ago, he went to school to pick him up for a doctor's appointment when a school worker recognized him.
Each principal gets alerts about all of registered sex offenders in their district.
"The principal of East Middle communicates that to his front office staff," said Stover.
Perry served 20 years in prison for second-degree rape.
He got out in 1997 and has promptly registered as a sex offender, but did not get permission from the school system to go on campus.
"He made one mistake," said Perry's wife, Linda.
Perry's wife said he is a changed man so well trusted that DSS allowed them to have custody of a relative's child.
"People just love him. He is just a good person," said Linda Perry.
She said the only reason he was in the school is because he was worried about her.
"My husband only walked in with me that day because I was having a dizzy spell," said Linda Perry.
The sheriff said his officers investigated the incident for two weeks and found no information that Michael Perry did anything suspicious while he was on campus and couldn't confirm that he had broken the law before.
"We are obligated by law to enforce this entire incident that occurs," said Sheriff David Carpenter.
Michael Perry is still in jail under a $5,000 bond.
