CHARLTOTE, N.C. —

On Monday night, transportation officials still have not said why they have delayed a safety rule to protect children by two years.

A 9 investigation uncovered a series of letters from the transportation secretary, putting off new rules to prevent so-called back-over accidents.

More than 100 children are killed each year by vehicles backing over them.

In 2007 Congress passed a law ordering new safety regulations, and the deadline was February 2011.

Safety groups said new cars are now equipped with better mirrors, sensors and cameras, but Washington has been under orders to make better visibility mandatory and more available to drivers.
