LINCOLNTON, N.C. —

There were fitness club applications with names, addresses and receipts dropped in a dumpster in front of the old Cruz Fitness Club on Highway 27 in Lincolnton.

They were laying on top of the heap in plain sight.

That's how passer-by Ronnie Edwards found them.

"Names and Social Security numbers -- it's really shocking," said Edwards.

Edwards called Eyewitness News, and Eyewitness News called Lincolnton police.

The investigating officer was there for just about a minute before he discovered a familiar name.

He climbed in, dug through the dumpster and grabbed as much sensitive paperwork as he could find.

Eyewitness News took a picture of one of the documents and went to the address listed on it.

The woman talked to us, but didn't want to show her face.

"From what I understand that's my application, yes," she said.

With her name, birthdate, address, past email address and phone number.

"It's just incomprehensible to me that someone could be that careless," she said.

Eyewitness News called Salvador Cruz, the former owner of club, which shut down last year.

The phone was disconnected, and it appears he moved out of his old home.

Eyewitness News is waiting for a response to the question of why boxes of sensitive information were left in dumpsters for anyone to see.

Eyewitness News also called Piedmont Properties, which represents the owners of the building.

After police sort through the papers they found, they'll tell the DA what they have discovered.

The DA will decide what charges, if any, should be filed and who might face charges.

After Eyewitness News showed one resident her personal information in the trash, she said she will get credit monitoring just to be sure her accounts are safe.
