Police have identified the man shot and killed in a home invasion in northwest Charlotte early Friday morning.
They say the victim was Davis Wayne Walthall, 42. Walthall was in his home on Maribel Avenue about 5 a.m. when three men with guns burst in and shot him.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that there were several children in the house at the time of the shooting but none were hurt. Police aren't saying what motivated the shooting but said in many cases home invasions are targeted attacks where armed men go after someone or something very specific.
Police did not release a detailed description of the suspects except to say that there were three men with guns. Police canvassed the area around the shooting hoping to find witnesses to the attack.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News the shooting hardly comes as a surprise.
"This goes on every day. Police on this street every day," said one neighbor who did not give his name.
Another, who said he has lived in the area most of his life, sounded like he had had more than he could take.
"It hurts you to see people lose their lives over an everyday thing. It could be you too," he said.
Police are asking anyone with information that would help them find the suspects to contact Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
