CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Police say a Charlotte man will face murder charges after he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend. Authorities arrested Jacquece Forest early Tuesday morning in a traffic stop on East Harris Boulevard. Police said the mother of Forest's 2-year-old son called 911 around 1 o'clock Tuesday morning, apparently worried because she said she spotted Forest in the woods behind her home. "He's crazy, she always talking about getting away from him, she wanted to get away from him," said Smith's friend Nekia Owens while describing Forest and Smith's estranged relationship. Owens said Smith recently had her locks changed and had plans to move. Jail records show Forest had spent time in Mecklenburg County Jail in September for the charge of assault on a female, but Smith's friends said he he had recently bonded out of jail. "I felt like she did all that she could to get out of the situation," said Smith's friend Kisha Poage. Poage said Smith had also recently started dating a co-worker at her job at Wells Fargo, a man named Luc Gonzalez. Police said Smith and Gonzalez were together at her north Charlotte duplex Tuesday morning when Smith reported spotting Forest. "I guess he was angry because he saw both of them together," said Owens. Neighbors told Eyewitness News they heard screams from inside the duplex sometime overnight. At 3 o'clock Tuesday morning, officers responding to the report of a speeding car stopped a car driven by Forest, according to investigators. Police said Forest, who was somehow injured, fled on foot to nearby apartments, where he was caught and arrested. Officers said after Forest went to CMC-University for treatment, he confessed to workers there that he had shot his girlfriend. Police who went to Smith's home on Malibu Drive said they found the bodies of Smith and Gonzalez inside, fatally shot. "She had so much life, so much to give ... heaven has another angel to look down on everyone," said Poage while crying at the crime scene on Tuesday afternoon. Smith's friends said her 2-year-old son was inside the home at the time of the shooting but was unharmed. He is now in the custody of family members.
Forest is now booked into the Mecklenburg jail on two counts of murder.
He is scheduled to be in cout Wednesday afternoon.
