CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

An alert neighbor helped officers arrest a break-in suspect, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

The neighbor called 911 last week and reported seeing a man pulling on the screen of a back window of a nearby home, police said. When officers got to the Skyland Avenue home, they said they found a shattered window and a cinder block nearby. Officers in front of the home saw someone walking inside of it, investigators said.

The owner of the home was contacted and came to open the front door for officers. Police said they found Steven McCree, 48, hiding behind a couch in the rear of the house.

McCree was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer.
